Ducasse

This past weekend I went down to Ath in Belgium to watch their famous parade. The main feature is the collection of giants that go down the streets. People wear these 15ft tall costumes and dance around. There are also lots of bands and giant floats going by. It was by far the longest parade I have ever watched; it took nearly three hours to go by. I thought it was really fun as the crowd was mostly locals and they were all in a really festive spirit. So, if you're ever around Ath in August, swing by.

Belgian wanderings

This post is a bit late, but I took a couple of day trips to Belgium the other weekend. The first was to Oostende to see the Atlantikwall museum. It shows the history of the costal fortifications there. The city itself isn't too bad, a nice harbour and a lively centre.

The second day I went to the open air museum in Bokrijk. There they had a variety of different buildings showing life in different parts of Belgium during the past. It was quite nice, but was spread out over such a large area that you got quite an exercise seeing it all.
